Method for Measuring Gloss of Coated Paper | Paper Gloss Meter
Coated paper is a relatively high gloss paper. This article mainly introduces the use of paper gloss meter to measure the gloss of coated paper.
1. What is the gloss of coated paper?
The gloss of coated paper can be defined as the total amount of specular reflection light on its surface, which can be measured by a professional paper gloss meter. Due to the different characteristics of the paper and the quality of the coating, there are differences in the surface gloss of the coated paper. By measuring the gloss of coated paper with a paper gloss meter, the optical properties of different coated papers can be distinguished.
Coated paper is a layer of paint on the base paper. The paper surface has good optical properties and printing properties, and is mainly used for printing impurities, books and other publishing papers, and printing papers such as trademarks, packaging, and catalogs. Such as good opacity and gloss, more appropriate ink absorption and color reduction, especially paper gloss and printing gloss will be significantly improved. Coated paper is a relatively typical type of coated paper.
2. The difference between coated paper and coated paper
Coated paper, also called coated paper, has many types and can be used for printing a variety of color prints. There are several types of coated paper:
(1)Single-sided coated paper: coated and calendered on one side, and glued on the other. The two sides of the paper have different properties and are suitable for printing on both sides.
(2)Double-sided coated paper: Both sides have been coated and calendered. The bottom surface is shiny and has good dimensional stability. It is suitable for general color printing.
(3)Special double-sided coated paper: coated and calendered on both sides, it has better gloss than ordinary double-sided coated paper, and its surface is smooth and detailed, which is suitable for printing bright objects that need to express metallic texture.
(4)Embossed coated paper: Both sides are coated and then embossed. The paper has a low gloss and a three-dimensional effect on the paper mask. It is suitable for color reproduction such as oil painting reproduction and art advertising design.
(5)Lightweight coated paper: The surface is slightly coated, which has better surface properties than non-coated paper, and the quality is between coated and non-coated paper.
Method for measuring gloss of coated paper
Coating gloss refers to the ratio of the specular reflectance of coated paper at a certain angle to the specular reflectance of standard black glass at the same angle. The specular reflectance of standard black glass is specified as 100%, which is denoted as 100. Degree, the paper's specular reflectance is the percentage of standard black glass specular reflectance.
When using a paper gloss meter to measure the gloss of coated paper, the results are different depending on the angle of incidence chosen. Therefore, the gloss value depends not only on the surface characteristics of the object, but also on the measurement angle. When measuring, you must determine the measurement angle of the paper gloss meter. For most papers, 75 degrees is a better measurement angle. Wax paper is 20 degrees. High-gloss coated paper is 45 degrees and 60 degrees. Report the measurement results. When using, you must indicate the use of the instrument and measurement angle.
The general angle on the market is a 60-degree angle, like Linshang Technology's universal 60-degree paper gloss meter LS192, with a range of 1000GU, which can test high gloss And low-gloss materials, because the gloss is a relative value, when the applied industry does not have a unified standard reference, you can use the LS192 universal 60-degree paper gloss meter to test. If the industry has a uniform standard, it is best to use the same angle of testing. Therefore, when selecting the measurement angle, you should choose differently according to different situations.
